Up before dawn on a downright cold morning, went to the main ghat – “ghat” means “stairway” – walked down the way we had last night, met our boat and our patient boatman. That sleepy, up-to-early feeling that makes everything seem so REAL! First we rowed – he rowed us – upstream, to where they were doing laundry, then downstream, past worshippers performing their ablutions in the sacred water (even colder than the air!), until we reached the main ghat (Dasahvamdeha Ghat) again. The boatman, avoiding other boats as the floated past, did his best to keep us in one place against the current, and I began sketching as the sun rose.
