George’s Postcard Note: In crowded India it’s hard to paint along packed city streets – but Pondicherry has a quiet section, the old French Quarter. That’s where I drew this parked rikshaw, its driver asleep. An older woman with a stick stood by, watching me in a not entirely friendly way. One by one, a dozen teenage boys gathered around, entranced, as if by a magic act, by the emerging image. In traveler pidgin I said, “Driver Sleeping.” “Drunk, Drunk!” they shouted back at me. Finally, the woman came over to see what I was doing, glanced at the picture, then stomped away. “She mad! You draw her ugly!” laughed the boys. Then the woman began beating the rikshaw driver with her stick – and I was afraid he’d drive off before I could finish my drawing!
