George’s Postcard Note: One of our favorite things to do in a new city is ride the public transportation system. That’s our way of learning a new place. In Vienna the transportation available is fun and varied – we rode streetcars, subways, commuter lines, buses and could have rented a public bicycle by credit card. The #9 bus went right to the Otto Wagner Villa, of the famous Secessionist architect. A short walk through an older outer neighborhood, and there was his villa, contrasting with the other houses by its all-white, gold-and-green-trimmed modernist “cube” design. This was his personal major villa, him showing off at the peak of his career. The white structure against the Vienna woods and the conventional houses was startling – and beautiful. The fun thing is that the surrealist artist, Bernard Fuchs, who now owns the house, allows visits and has decorated it with his bizarre paintings and sculptures – inside and out! I think Wagner would approve.
