George’s Postcard Note: The dome of the State House is just so amazing to me – in its shape – that I had to visit the interior to see what it was like. I had no idea when I went in whether I’d be allowed to draw it, what with security issues and all. Well, the security guards couldn’t have been nicer and in fact said they wanted to see the results! I found a seat right on the cool marble floor in a corner – if an octagon has a “corner”. Official state workers walked by looking curious, even from the balconies. After all, this is a working building. I knew I would have to do two drawings to capture this beautifully complicated shape. The ornate plaster detailing, on surfaces and around doorways, and also the almost garish historic colors, added to the challenge. I thought Harry Truman and Mary Cassatt stamps would add nicely to the portrait gallery and also provide a nice metaphor of art and politics. Who knows, Truman probably walked under this very dome!
