George’s Postcard Note: To go north from our house on Elizabeth Street meant walking straight up hill as only one can in San Francisco. I knew from experience that I would I get my exercise on this hill. I also knew I would be rewarded with a fabulous view and some wonderful adaptations of architecture to hillside. I was not disappointed. Here I found the intersection looking like this: one flat street, one straight-up-hill street & two straight-down streets at 90 degrees to each other. How perfect – tres San Francisco. And did I fail to mention the East Bay in the distance? The architecture I chose to focus on involved more very San Francisco building elements: the (usually high) retaining wall, the small set of stairs to get through it and up to the house, and finally the house and garden sitting on top.
